Bexhill lost by five wickets at home to Horsham despite an unbeaten Callum Guest century helping them to their highest total of the season.

On a beautiful Polegrove wicket, which was a tribute to all the hard work Mick Waghorn has put in, and a lightning fast outfield, more than 550 runs were scored in the day.

After losing the toss and being put in, Bexhill made steady progress initially, but the mammoth score 277-7 declared owed much to Guest’s 109 not out from 108 balls.

With his aggressive running and superb placement, Guest took the game by the scruff of the neck. Johnathan Haffenden (53 from 38 balls) played a typically belligerent innings and the poor scorers were hard pushed to keep up.

Prior to the fifth wicket partnership of 67 between Guest and Haffenden, Luke Youngs (21), Shawn Johnson (20), Malcolm Johnson (19) and Tim Hambridge (21) had all made starts in the top five.

Horsham got off to a reasonable start in reply after an early Shawn Johnson wicket. And with Bexhill’s overseas player Dean Crawford having an off day, the visitors were always up with the required run rate.

Some missed chances cost Bexhill dearly and they were unable to put a break on the runs. It was topped off by a last over in which a dropped catch was followed by a four and four sixes.

Tom Johnson smashed 45 not out off just 18 balls. There were similar contributions, albeit at a slower pace, from Ben Shoare (46), Thomas Haines (49) and James Johnson (47), while George Garton top-scored with a run-a-ball 74.

Guest followed up his century with a couple of wickets, Liam Bryant picked up one and a Haffenden run out accounted for Haines. The result sees Horsham move above Bexhill into the top four, albeit having played an extra game.

Standings (played 12 matches unless stated): 1 Preston Nomads 268pts, 2 Roffey (11) 261, 3 East Grinstead 259, 4 Horsham 221, 5 BEXHILL (11) 210, 6 Cuckfield 208, 7 Brighton & Hove 182, 8 Billingshurst (11) 167, 9 Eastbourne 151, 10 Middleton (11) 149.
