Bexhill blown away by Giddins

BEXHILL’S upturn in fortunes came to a shuddering halt with a 133-run defeat away to fellow strugglers Eastbourne.

The home side amassed 224-9 off 50.4 overs thanks to quick-fire knocks from Mark Tomsett (69 off 67 balls) and Ben Brown (47 off 50 balls) who put on 109 for the second wicket.

The most successful bowlers were Callum Guest who claimed 3-59 off 18.4 overs and Jamie Bristow-Diamond who took 2-47 off 12.

Bexhill, who had won their previous two matches in the Sussex Cricket Premier League, were dismissed for just 91 in reply.

Skipper Malcolm Johnson (21), Andrew Harriott (34) and Tim Hambridge (21 not out off 52 balls) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as ex-England pace bowler Ed Giddins caused all sorts problems on his way to superb figures of 7-27 off 15 overs.

This result leaves second-from-bottom Bexhill 13 points clear of Eastbourne who have a game in hand.

Also in the top flight, defending champions Hastings Priory reached 227-5 at home to Horsham before bad weather caused the match to be abandoned. Kirk Wernars was undefeated on 87.
