Bexhill boosted by bonus T20 win

HAMISH Russell has described Bexhill Cricket Club’s Twenty20 win on a rain-ravaged opening day in the Sussex Cricket League as a huge bonus.

Bexhill sit second in the fledgling Premier Division standings after picking up 16 points in the victory away to Brighton & Hove.

Although the league fixture was officially abandoned due to the bad weather, the teams managed to stage a game played under T20 rules.

Chasing a total of 131-5, the visitors got home for the loss of four wickets with eight balls to spare thanks to an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 93 between captain Malcolm Johnson and James Vaughan.

Bexhill gained six points more than the 10 dished out for an abandonment.

“It’s a huge, huge bonus,” said Bexhill first team manager Russell. “When we came up to the Premier League two years ago it took us until June or July to win. These are only young players and it’s given us confidence - that’s what we can take out of it.

“I know technically it’s an abandonment but we we have won our first game of the season and other teams know we won the game. Everybody is pretty happy about it.”

Bexhill are due to host their first home fixture of the season on Saturday when Eastbourne visit The Polegrove.

Meanwhile, Sidley are away to St James’s Montefiore in Sussex Division Two. Both games start at 1pm.
