Bexhill cricketers in T20 triumph

BEXHILL claimed an encouraging win in a Twenty20 match away to Brighton & Hove on the opening day of the Sussex Cricket League season.

The bad weather forced the abandonment of the scheduled league fixture but the teams hung around to contest a game played under T20 rules.

Brighton compiled a total of 131-5 after recovering from 14-3 at Nevill Sports Ground.

Timothy Jarvis (49) and Christopher Atherton (21) steadied the innings with a fourth wicket partnership of 31 before the former joined forces with Michael Rippon (39 not out off 28 balls) in a fifth wicket stand worth 79.

Jake Beale was the pick of the Bexhill bowlers with a fine spell of 2-9 off four overs.

The Bexhill innings pretty much mirrored that of their opponents as they found themselves in trouble at 39-4 despite a run-a-ball 21 from new overseas player Andrew Harriott.

Malcolm Johnson (58 not out) was then joined by James Vaughan (34 not out) and the pair shared an unbroken match-winning stand of 93 for the fifth wicket.

The victory saw Bexhill go second in the fledgling Sussex Premier League table on 16 points behind Horsham who beat Eastbourne in the only game proper to beat the rain.
