The men from The Polegrove have won one of their two Sussex Cricket League Division Two games so far and had the better part of a draw in the other to sit third in the embryonic table.

“We knew Eastbourne would be in and around there because they’re a good side, but so are we,” Johnson said. “Everyone’s got a year older and got a year’s experience of Premier League cricket. We’re excited and think we can do well.”

Bexhill face another trip into the unknown tomorrow (Saturday) because opponents Findon, rather like opening day adversaries Middleton, are a team they haven’t encountered in recent seasons.

“We don’t know much about them,” confessed Johnson. “I’ve a funny feeling they will be almost like Glynde, the type of team where they’ve played with each other for a long time and know what they do, but we’re confident going over there. The bowling unit have been working so well together.”

Callum Guest is due to return, although overseas player Andrew Williams is expected to miss out with a side strain.
