Burgess Hill lose out to Glynde

Overnight and early morning rain didn’t stop Burgess Hill’s first league game of the season starting on time at recently relegated Glynde.

Tom Trowbridge lost the toss and Hill found themselves batting first with Trowbridge himself opening up with Jack Simpson.

Simpson fell first, lbw to Dale Tranter, a bowler who took over 50 wickets last time he played at this level, and before long Hill were two down when Beddis had Nathan Cooper caught behind.

Trowbridge (43) and Karl Boffey (21) dug in to give Hill a solid platform and Ian Simpson batted well for 30 runs. Some nice shots from Shaun Kevern (19) gave Hill impetus towards the end of the innings until a misjudged sweep/ramp shot brought about his downfall and despite being well placed at 136-5 Hill collapsed to 147 all out under pressure to score quick runs against the tight bowling of Tranter (4-23) and off-spinner Joe Adams (2-35).

Glynde started well thanks to some lusty blows from opener Adams whilst Chris Stanyard looked less fluent driving through the air and a number of thick edges running passed backward point and gully. However his luck was in when the unfortunate Tom Penfold dropped him on 0 in the covers and he went on to capitalise scoring 34. Adams chipped straight to Ian Simpson off the bowling of Boffey for a brief 23 and when three quick wickets fell to a combination of Dan Yates and Jack Simpson the game was evenly poised with Glynde still requiring 40 runs to win and just five wickets remaining. Chances came and went as two sharp edges were put down in the slip cordon off the impressive Jack Simpson (3-38) and Hill would rue those missed chances as Archie Burrows (16*) and Stuart Mouland (31*) carefully paced their way to a five wicket victory for Glynde with three overs to spare.

All in it very much felt like a game lost rather than a game in which they were beaten for Burgess Hill who must learn from a disappointing tail end to their batting display and start taking their chances in the field.
