Campbell happy to carry on

The 33-year-old all-rounder completed his first season at the helm last weekend with Priory finishing third in the top flight of the Sussex Cricket League.

Campbell, a four-time league winner with Priory, said: “Obviously there are decisions that need to be made at a club level, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Living and working in Hertfordshire as a school teacher, Campbell missed most of the first half of the summer before getting stuck into the role during the second half of the campaign.

“It’s not ideal the way it’s split between myself and (vice-captain) John Morgan doing a lot of the organisation, and Kirk (Wernars) and Mach (Matt Machan) doing some captaincy work as well,” Campbell continued.

“But it’s the best option at the moment. I think overall we’re pretty happy with the way it’s worked and if it’s seen as the right option next year, I’ll be happy to carry on.”

Campbell expects Priory to field a similar squad next year when their nearest away game will be against Brighton & Hove following the relegation of their local rivals Eastbourne and Bexhill.

“I don’t know of anybody we will be losing,” Campbell went on. “On the whole I think we’ve got a really good, talented young squad. It’s a case of keeping those guys going and improving every year.”
