Captain hails cup winners

Priory clinched the Gray-Nicolls Sussex T20 Cup for the first time since 1996 (when it was played over a longer format) with a comprehensive win over local rivals Eastbourne at Hove on Sunday.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” said Priory captain Campbell, who was man of the match in the final. “In the cup run I think that’s certainly our best performance. It was a quality performance from one to 11.”

The triumph has come despite losing Sussex duo Matt Machan and Kirk Wernars during the winter, and seeing little of key players Harry Finch and Josh Poysden.

What’s more, it’s been achieved with a very young side. Take Campbell and John Morgan out of the equation, and the oldest player is 24. Elliot Hooper, a very strong contender for player of the season, is just 16.

“It’s certainly been one of the most pleasing and enjoyable seasons I’ve had, and I’ve played for nigh on 20 years now,” Campbell continued. “It’s just been a fantastic atmosphere.

“I’m working with a bunch of young and talented lads who are proper Priory boys. Most of them have been brought up by the club and seeing them work so well together is incredibly pleasing.

“This season if we finish in the top three or two and win a cup - considering where we feared we might be - is certainly up there with one of our best seasons and these guys are only going to get better.”
