Champs Bognor carry on regardless

Bognor v Glynde & Beddingham

Sussex League division three

On a typical overcast bank holiday weekend, Bognor won the toss and elected to bat.

Despite having won the title, Bognor were in no-nonsense form and a steady opening partnership of 48 between Max Ashmore and Andy Quincey led the way.

The game was proceeding nicely for Bognor but after the loss of Ashmore for 50, a quick cluster of wickets looked to derail the innings.

At 119 for four, old hands Luke Seward (46) and Elliott Clarke (34) took Bognor away from danger but their departure with the score on 167 for six could have resulted in the hosts fading.

However, the hirsute Jim Fallick and Mikey Harris saw further danger was avoided and Bognor finished their innings on 210 for six. For Glynde, George Burton-Durham and Charlie Hobden picked up two wickets apiece.

Glynde’s innings came and went in the proverbial blink of an eye as Bognor’s bowlers went to town.

Tim Van Noort continued his excellent form to reduced the visitors to nine for three. Josh Broad (2-26) came to the party to snaffle more Glynde wickets and Van Noort finished off a great day’s work by taking two more wickets and grabbing five for ten.

At 23 for seven there was no way back for Glynde and when the impish Harris slipped in with two for eight, the game was up. Glynde were dismissed for 57, Bognor winning the contest by 153 runs.

Chichester Priory Park v Crawley Eagles

Division three

Chichester’s home game with Crawley Eagles in division three was abandoned because of rain.

Chichester needed to take the full 30 points to keep their slim hopes of promotion alive.

The match began at midday under threatening skies after Crawley won the toss and asked Chichester to bat. The hosts were reduced to 64 for seven when the heavens opened and the players were forced off around 1.40pm.

The rain continued and with the forecast looking grim, the captains agreed no more play was going to be possible and the match was abandoned at 3pm.

It means Chichester can no longer be promoted. Their final match is at Goring this Saturday.

Wisborough Green 2nd v Bognor 2nd

2nd XI division three west

At a murky Wisborough Green, Bognor were invited to bat on a wicket offering value for the seamers.

The visitors didn’t get into their stride and despite 35 apiece from the burly Sam Adams and thunderous Richard Cox, Bognor were bowled out for 169. For the Green, Frank Vickery (3-13) and Tom Jenkins (3-64) were the pick of the attack.

In reply, Green were 89 for eight but a fine rearguard action between skipper James Sadler (84no) and Jacob Ball saw Green home by two wickets. However, it was not all bad news for Bognor as Rich Cox’s six for 73 sees him level on 59 second-XI wickets with Regis Oval legend Jon Denby.
