On a scorcher of a day at the Regis Oval, Bognor won by nine wickets to take another big step towards promotion.

They won the toss and elected to field but after Portslade proceeded steadily to 38 without loss, Bognor debutant Tim Van Noort showed his class by bagging skipper Paul Glover for 33 and Tom Mooney for a duck.

Seamer Jim Lee bagged a wicket but Pretoria paceman Van Noort accounted for another Slade batsman to leave the visitors on the ropes.

Lee bowled Dan Holgate for ten to finish with a decent two for 28 from nine overs but the party was just beginning as young Joe Ashmore entered the fray. His three wickets for eight runs in a smidge over 11 overs did for Portslade but the coup-de-grace was performed by Van Noort who bagged five for 25, leaving Portslade all out for 104.

Bognor’s batsmen showed no mercy as despite losing lively Geordie Andy Quincey for 11, Max Ashmore and skipper Zayne Bux batted with few alarms to lead them to victory.

With Ashmore making 51 not out on his 23rd birthday and Bux 38 not out, Bognor won by nine wickets.

This Saturday sees them head to Priory Park, Chichester.

Chichester v Burgess Hill

Division three

Chichester earned an unlikely 17-run victory over third-placed Burgess Hill.

Captain Dan Weigl won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny day but Chichester’s hopes of a positive start went out the window as early as the third over.

Burgess Hill left-arm seamer Dan Strange achieved the rare feat of a hat-trick when he removed Matt Bennison, Jolyon Dannatt and Weigl, all of them lbw. George Stephens followed them back in a couple of overs later to leave Chichester floundering on 16 for four. Opener John Edwards (top scorer with 31) watched the carnage from the other end while still to score a run.

He called on all of his 300-game experience and, in partnership with Simon Hasted, tried to steer Chichester towards a respectable score. The pair put on 42 for the fifth wicket before they fell to Peter Billinghay. Another mini collapse left the hosts on 86 for eight.

Dan Joseph and Matt Geffen are more accustomed to tormenting the opposition with the ball but they played an important role with the bat.

With Joseph (27 off 21 balls) the aggressor and Geffen (15) more watchful, the pair put on 43 critical runs for the ninth wicket. Joseph was bowled by Strange and Geffen departed in the next over as Chichester were dismissed for 133.

Burgess Hill had a tricky 50-minute session before tea and looked nervous in their chase – and Joseph took full advantage. He took three quick wickets as the visitors limped to 17 for three.

After the interval, Weigl made up for his failure with the bat to remove Shaun Kevern and Matt Charman cheaply.

Joe Maskell held firm as he tried to steer Burgess Hill towards the target. Geffen returned to the attack and drew an edge from Maskell to remove him for 45.

Dan Yates tried to hit out and brought Burgess Hill even closer to their target. He was the final man to fall when he edged Geffen into the waiting hands of Simon Hasted. The visitors were out for 116, giving Chichester an unlikely 17-run victory.

With six wins from seven, Chichester are one of the form teams in division three, but they are still in fourth place. Another win is needed when Bognor visit this Saturday.

Bognor skipper Josh Seward chose to bat as Bognor’s seconds look to keep the promotion momentum going.

A fine opening partnership of 101 between southpaw Sam Adams and classy Mark Woolnough saw Bognor on their way with even an Adams blow to the head not stopping him making a fine 77.

Woolnough made a composed 39 but Portslade’s Keith Piper took four for 50.

Bognor declared at 213 for eight and paceman Rich Cox’s quick double and a peach of an inswinger from Tom Woolnough to remove Dale Funnell’s furniture left Slade at 31 for three.

Ryan Burtenshaw’s counter-attacking 41 halted the assault before Cox returned to quell the resistance. Sam Adams scuttled in to grab two wickets and the sure hands of skipper Seward accounted for a stumping off the wily Jamie Woolnough.

John Hooker burgled a wicket, the ball coming off of the batsman’s glove and helmet to be grabbed by Cox at second slip.

Cox thundered in like a raging bull to dismiss Piper and grab four for 54 and with eight balls to go, Adams (3-22) pounced to grab the last wicket and Bognor won by 59 runs.
