Cricket: Aldwick and West Wittering ease to more success

Worthing Chippingdale v Aldwick

Invitation League division two

Aldwick bounced back to winning ways with an emphatic win as they beat Worthing Chippingdale by eight wickets to remain in second place.

Leaders Crawley Dowjn only kept them off top spot with a one-run win.

A good performance from the bowlers (Ed Firlotte 3-15 and Louis Paul 2-19) and fielders (a great catch by Joel Lodge and two spot-on run-outs by Paul) had Chippindale all out for a paltry 107 in 35 overs, which gave the visitors 59 overs in which to cross the winning line.

Aldwick stumbled a little at 16 for two but from then, it was plain sailing as Paul made a match-winning undefeated 73.

With suitable support from Adam Rutter (25*), victory came in the 26th over. Chips’ Ollie Morris (2-20) tried his best with two wickets but could not rectify the mess his batting chums had put his side in with their poor performance.

This week, league leaders Crawley Down travel to Storrington but Aldwick will be across the sea in the Isle of Wight starting their six-game 2015 tour.

Horsham 3rd v West Wittering

Division three

On a good batting track, skipper Carl Tupper lost the toss and Wittering were asked to field.

First-XI debutant Jack Lyons (1-20) made an instant impact, bowling their opener with his fourth ball. He bowled fantastic lines with pace, swing and bounce, bamboozling batsman.

At the other end, Matt Jewiss bowled tight lines with little reward early on. Horsham recovered to 78 for one but then lost three wickets quickly thanks to some sharp fielding by Stuart Moorey and clever bowling by Rob Gray (2-11).

Horsham took the score to 160 before wickets fell to Richard Hammond (1-38) and Jewiss (2-68). Andy Priest kept the pressure on, causing Horsham batsmen to try to steal quick singles.

Hammond took advantage and claimed two run-outs in as many overs. After a short rain delay, Horsham came out and finished on 209 for nine.

Wittering were confident they could reach the total but Whitehouse bowled a beautiful delivery that Mark Taylor (0) nicked behind in the first over.

Tupper joined Moorey and they began the barrage. Both batsman hit the Horsham bowlers to all parts of the ground. Tupper reached his 50 in 29 balls, his first 40 runs all in boundaries.

The two took the score to 125 off just 16 overs, until Moorey (43) mistimed a shot which looped back to the bowler. Gareth Lendrum joined Tupper and Wittering continued to push on.

With the score at 144, Tupper was bowled with a fantastic inswinging delivery by Glossop (2-40) for 82, his runs coming from just 59 balls. Lendrum (40) was caught going for a big shot over mid-wicket. Priest (30*) and Gray (7*) ensured the job was completed, hitting the winning runs in the 32nd over. The win pushed Wittering to the top of division three at the halfway point of the season.

Aldwick 2nd v Steyning 3rd

Division six

Aldwick seconds were victorious and finished the day in second spot, like their first team.

Aldwick skipper Matt Robinson marshaled his troops well and with effective rotation of his six bowlers Steyning were shot out for a below-par 158.

Wicket-takers were Grant Wilson (3-27), Josh Sargeant (2-27) and Harry Rosser (2-32) but all bowlers performed well.

At 76 for seven it could have been worse for the visitors but a rescue act by Mark Sallis (39) and Issac Tidley (33*) gave their side a glimmer of hope.

Despite a few failures along the way, in the end it was consistent batting from Arthur Bradbury (38), Will Pegg (37) and Matt Spindler (25*) that saw Aldwick home by four wickets. Nathan Tyler was mainly responsible for the home side’s intermittent batting failures with four for 34.

This week Aldwick seconds pack their bags in readiness for their first fixture against Arreton on the club’s 2015 Isle of Wight tour.

West Wittering 2nd v Goring 3rd

Division eight

Having lost the toss, Wittering were asked to bowl first on an overcast but warm afternoon.

The bowlers made a strong start and had Goring at 44 for five with wickets from Joe Sissons, Alex Salmon and Harry Staight.

Tight bowling from Charlie Caddy brought a wicket in his final over. Young Will Finch bowled well again, taking one for five.

Sissons and Staight were brought on and Staight removed the last man with a edge that found Liam Bates in the slips. Goring were all out for just 90.

With one eye on the weather, James White and Bates were sent out to finish the job quickly. Both hit some exciting shots to knock off the total in just 12 overs, White with 42 not out and Bates 37 not out.

The second XI have won all eight games with maximum points and will be a very hard team to catch.

Selsey 2nd v Ram 3rd

Division nine

Selsey inflicted Ram’s first defeat of the season in a bizzare game at Selsey.

Captain Dave Clarke invited Ram to bat first and this looked a good decision as Ram were dismissed for just 68 in 23.4 overs.

Josh Stocks took three wickets and one apiece for Ash Humphries and Jo Clarke but it was a superb burst from James Chaloner with his maiden league five-for (5-11) which did the damage.

Any thoughts Selsey had of this being a cake-walk were soon banished as they collapsed to 40 for seven and when this become 55 for eight, but it was left to the experienced Nic Nolan with 19 not out to take Selsey home.

He was well supported by Joe Clarke, who held his end up to help secure 30 points and overtake Ram at the top.
