Park clinched the Sussex Women’s T20 Development Cup with a nine-run victory over Selsey at Horsham CC on Saturday.

It’s an amazing achievement for a team which was only formed this year with the majority of players never having played the sport competitively until this summer.

After choosing to bat first, Park got off to a good start by reaching 50 off the first six overs thanks to an excellent partnership between Helen Harrod (35) and Nicky Pym (12).

After their departures, Selsey pulled the game back by restricting the runs and taking regular wickets before skipper Lucy Wright (12) and Hayley Harrod (6 not out) scored late runs to take Park to a competitive 105-7.

Selsey also got off to a strong start in reply before Mandy Brookes removed both openers to make the score 54-2 off nine overs. Pym dismissed the dangerous Denise Halford (17) and struck again in her final over to leave Selsey 80-4 with six overs remaining, but still looking favourites.

An excellent spell by Lucy Beaumont tied Selsey’s batsmen down and when Helen Harrod came back on to trap Gemma Halford (16) LBW, Park started to believe they could turn the game around.

Beaumont got a well-deserved wicket to leave Selsey 88-7 with three overs remaining. Georgie Challen, a late call- up due to sickness, then bowled a superb maiden and helped by an excellent run out from Helen Harrod in the next over, plus a wicket for Alison Newby, Park knew the cup would be theirs. Selsey finished on 96-8.

Park are always on the lookout for new players of any age.
