Eastbourne Women unlucky to lose Sussex-Surrey showdown - women score a first at Hailsham

Eastbourne Women 100/8 (20ovs); Ansty Women 89/8

The first round of the Women’s National T20 Knockout pitted Sussex sides Eastbourne and Ansty against each other.

A tight affair was dominated by good bowling and decent fielding.

Ansty inserted Eastbourne and reduced them to 2-2 before stand-in skipper player of the match Mimi Wilton (50) and Arwyn James (15) steadied the ship.

Eastbourne made it to three figures thanks to Wilton’s determination, setting Ansty 101 to win.

Ansty struggled to keep up with the rate, thanks to the tight bowling of Katie Eagle (1-12) and Arwyn James (1-18).

Wickets began to steadily fall as Ansty tried to forge a way back into the game.

Tilda Collins (2-9) was outstanding and was well supported by leg spinner Sara Sadiq who picked up 3-22. Eastbourne won by 11 runs.

Slam Super Cup Final

Spencer Women 101/5 - Eastbourne Women 99/7

The winners of county competitions in Sussex and Surrey representing their counties in the inaugural Slam Super Cup at Horsham.

Spencer batted first and Katie Eagle (1-15) and Arwyn James (2-17) made headway.

Spencer recovered and crept their way 101-5 off their 20 overs. Tilly Dow (1-15) and Sara Sadiq (1-18) did well.

Eastbourne were without players on Sussex Vipers and football duty.

Polly McCarthy-Williams was out early, giving Spencer CC an early boost.

Wilton (18) and Eagle (21) got the Eastbourne reply moving before both were dismissed.

The reply stuttered, but everyone chipped in.

With 11 required to win off the last two overs, there was controversy as Eastbourne felt the umpires failed to pick up three no balls for incorrect field settings.

Eastbourne needed nine off the last over and ended two runs short as Tilly Dow (15*) and Sara Sadiq (4*) were left stranded and out of time.

Eastbourne can be proud of their efforts, with their squad depth proving invaluable already.

They play their first County League game and start their Sussex Slam title defence this week in a double header at Burgess Hill.

Hastings 2nd v Hailsham 1st

Hailsham travelled to Horntye Park for their first competitive game of the season in the preliminary round of the SCL T20 Trophy.

Hailsham skipper Andrew Anthony won the toss and elected to field. Anthony (0-36) opened the bowling with Tom McDonald (2-39), who got the breakthrough thanks to a Mark Renals catch at wide mid-on.

Simon Dunning (1-24) dismissed the other opener, leaving Hastings 36-2.

James Bellett (0-32) had no luck and a handful of catches went down. Ollie McDonald came on for some off-spin, while Matt Anthony (0-24) was a left-arm option.

McDonald claimed a caught and bowled as Hastings rallied to post an imposing 198-3 from their 20 overs.

Tom Hicks (60) and Ollie McDonald (39) led Hailsham’s reply.

McDonald was caught trying to force the pace but Matt Dawber (33) and Hicks passed 100 in the 11th over. Dawber fell lbw before Simon Dunning (8) was bowled with 125 on the board.

Mark Renals (14) joined Hicks, who passed 50, but both were out in the 18th over. Captain Anthony (9*) and vice-captain Tom McDonald (13*) could only get Hailsham to 180-5.

The IQ Builders Merchant MoM was Hicks.

Hailsham 2nd XI saw their friendly against Uckfield ended early because of rain.

* Last Sunday goes down in the history books at Hailsham Cricket Club for the first ever hardball women’s match - and what a 20/20 contest it was at the beautiful Roebuck Park. After winning the toss Kaleigh Pavitt decided to field first and stuck Holly Young’s team into bat.

Kate Horrigan (15) and Maisie Harris (26*) set a great foundation for the rest of the team to build upon, dispatching the bad ball and running hard between the wickets. Young Connie Filtness lit up the fixture with a stunning display of away swing bowling as she finished with 4-16 from her four overs. Most of the other bowlers struggled for consistency. Lauren Wilkinson was the other main contributor with a brisk 18 that enabled them to post 98-5 from their allotted overs.

In response Molly Crosbie dealt a massive early blow by taking 3-11 from her four overs and the team struggled to ever really bounce back. Romily Smith (19), Laura Carpenter (18) and Sharon Punter (16*) did their best to keep the side in the contest and batted extremely well, but with the required rate creeping up wickets continued to fall. Emma Thornley was in great form during the middle overs taking (2-9) from 3 overs as the team finished on 79-8.

This was a great day for all the women and girls, with three players involved in their first ever hardball game and eight U14s stepping up. The signs are bright for this new team and with a great work and team ethic everyone is looking forward to the 2021 season. Sunday sees the Roses welcome Lewes to the Recreation Ground for a 1pm start.

The Roots Ground Maintenance & Landscaping player of the match went to both Connie and Maisie for standout performances with the bat and ball.

Eastbourne

Eastbourne IIIs started the season with a comfortable win over Hastings thirds at Larkins Field in the T20 plate.

Eastbourne restricted Hastings to 114. Martin Barker and Nitesh Kashyap took two wickets apiece.

In reply Zach Smith and Sully Hallett batted well, leaving Ravi Reddy and debutant Ben Saunders to steer Eastbourne home.

MoM was Reddy for his well-paced 32 not out.

Pevensey 2s v Heathfield Park 2s

Batting first, Pevensey lost an early wicket, but Steve Hoadley and Guy Moore put on 81.

The middle order fell away, leaving Pev short of 200. But 37 extras took the score to 194 off 40 overs. Jamie Sykes of Heathfield took 4-37.

Olly Moore again made an early breakthrough, and Perry and Hoadley kept Heathfield Park to two an over for 15 overs, but without taking wickets.

Dave Beck snaffled a one-handed slip catch to start wickets falling.

Guy Moore took 2-5 and Olly Moore returned to finished with 2-15. Craddock top scored for Heathfield with 39 as they ended on 145-6.

Pevensey 3s v Buxted Park 3s

Pevensey hosted Buxted Park in a pre season friendly at their second ground in Ninfield.

Hail and rain threatened to delay the start. Pevensey captain David Trunkfield lost the toss and Buxted chose to bat.

Eleven-year-old Charlie Trunkfield (1-21) and 13-year-old Josh Dowsett (3-1) produced excellent bowling to reduce the visitors to 24-4 .

Sublime catches by Tom Cottington along with excellent bowling and fielding ensured Buxted were bowled out for 78.

Pevensey openers Paul Board and Paul Biddle were outearly to leave Pev 6-2. The skipper stopped the rot, but it took an excellent partnership of 51 between Fred Wallis and Charlie Trunkfield to bring victory close.

Wallis was caught for 45 and Trunkfield took a blow from some quick bowling.

Adam Llewelyn-Smith finished it with two glorious fours.

Isfield v Pevensey

Pevensey took a young and talented side to Isfield on Sunday and came away with a penultimate-over victory.

Isfield were indebted to James Fellowes who retired after reaching 100.

The Pev bowlers stuck to their task. Josh Dowsett took 4-42 as Isfield ended with 229-6.

Pevensey’s classy all-rounders Caleb Laloo and Fred Wallis put on 120, easing the ball to all parts of the ground.

Laloo fell for 64, Wallis for 54, but Dom Simes scorched 42* to take Pevensey home. Fletcher had the best figures for Isfield with 2-39.

Alfriston v Pevensey 2s

On a cold and windy day, Pevensey fielded a mixed team containing three under-12s, who all performed creditably in a five-wicket defeat.

Ian Swingler (25) started their innings well, before U12 Reed Hornby scored his first adult runs for Pevensey, batting with proud dad Gavin Hornby, whose return brought him a 50.

Gaurav Biljani hit well at the end of the innings (25*) which closed on 161-9.

Opening the bowling were the other juniors, Charlie Trunkfield and Jonah Corbishley, who both showed style and control.

Corbishley got an early breakthrough and Trunkfield beat the bat regularly.

Crowhust (34) and Shooter (42) took the score to 90-1 before Biljani took 3-30.

Cogdale’s 55 not out off 39 balls took Alfriston to victory. Credit to Matt Loe, who was superb behind the stumps for Pevensey.

Glynde continued their excellent start to the season with a good win on Saturday against Rottingdean.

Rottingdean batted first and were bowled out for 184 with Henry Ledden top-scoring with 88.

Glynde’s bowling was led by Will Burton Durham who took 3-26, with Charlie Silvester (3-38), Charlie Hobden (2-20) and Tom Silvester (2-26) supporting well.

With rain having fallen during the tea interval, the teams decided that Glynde would have to chase a reduced target of 131 in 25 overs.

And in-form Archie Burrows (64) and Matt Blunt (43*) lead the charge as Glynde ran out victors by six-wickets.

Glynde 2nd XI played in a reverse fixture at Rottingdean 2nd XI.

Glynde batted and reached 185-7 in their 40 overs, with David Tungate top-scoring with 66.

Aamer Riaz (4-20) and Angus Bishop (2-23) helped bowl Rottingdean out for just 96.

Glynde start their league campaign at Portslade tomorrow and then entertain Rottingdean again in the second round of the Voneus Village Cup this Sunday.

Newick 1st XI v Three Bridges 2nd XI

Three Bridges 2nd XI won the toss and elected to field at Newick and with an early flurry of runs Newick made steady progress,

They reached a total of 119-4. Ben Whelpton (40*) and Joe Waylett (39) were Newick’s top scorers.

In reply Bridges passed the total in their 17th over on 123-2. Whelpton took 3-14 for Newick.
