Matt Machan top-scored with a half-century as Scotland gave co-hosts New Zealand a real scare before succumbing to a three-wicket defeat.

The left-handed batsman made 56 at number four to help Scotland recover from 12-4 to post what appeared to be a low total of 142 all out from 36 overs.

New Zealand also found it tough going with the bat, however, on a glorious day in Dunedin before scraping over the line at 146-7 with 25.1 overs to spare for their second Pool A win out of two.

Scotland got off to a nightmare start against the swinging ball before Sussex talent Machan and Richie Berrington (50) put on 97 for the fifth wicket. Machan hit seven fours and a six in a 79-ball knock.

Machan was a key figure in the Priory side which won the Sussex Premier League title in 2011, scoring 726 runs at an average of 66 with four fifties and two hundreds. He also made eight appearances for the club in 2012.
