Ex-Priory star in South Africa squad

Chris Morris, Hastings Priory’s overseas player in 2008, has been named in South Africa’s squad for a tri-nations T20 tournament in Zimbabwe from June 18-24.

With four senior players rested, the uncapped Morris has been given his chance after impressing in domestic cricket in his homeland. South Africa will begin their campaign against Bangladesh in Harare on June 19.

Cricket South Africa convener of selectors Andrew Hudson said: “Morris’ selection continues our policy of creating international opportunities for those who perform outstandingly well at franchise level and this certainly applies in his case.

“He was the leading wicket-taker in the MiWay T20 Challenge (21 wickets at 12.6 with an economy rate of 6.8) and was also very effective as a lower order hitter with a batting strike rate of 200.

“He played a very significant role in getting the Lions to the final and this included stand-out bowling performances in the two league victories over the Nashua Titans, the eventual champions.”

The tall Morris took 31 league wickets during his summer in Hastings with a best of 5/8 on his debut against Brighton & Hove. He also scored 316 league runs with a best of 113 against Stirlands.

Morris, 25, certainly isn’t the first Priory player to gain international recognition. Another overseas player, Morne van Wyk, represented South Africa, while Michael Yardy, of course, has played for England.
