Family say Hobden was celebrating New Year in Scotland

The family of Sussex bowler Matt Hobden have said he was away celebrating the New Year with friends in Scotland when he died.

The 22-year-old’s body was found by police on Saturday at a private property in Forres, near Inverness.

The promising bowler was set to return to pre-season training at Hove with the rest of his team-mates on Monday.

A police investigation into the tragic death of the former Eastbourne College pupil is continuing, but have said there are not thought to be any suspicions circumstances.

In a statement, released through police, his family said: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Matthew who had been celebrating the new year with friends in the Forres area.

“We now ask that we are left alone to deal with the tragic circumstances that have unfolded and are allowed to grieve in private at this difficult time.”

Tributes have flooded in for the fast bowler, who had played 18 First Class games for the county and taken 48 wickets.
