Finch: It’s not over yet

Jason Finch maintains that Hastings Priory are very much still in the title race.

Priory have slipped to third in the Sussex Cricket League Premier Division on the back of last weekend’s rain-affected draw at home to local rivals Eastbourne.

But their captain Finch said: “It’s certainly not over yet. The results didn’t go our way elsewhere, but we’ve still got very winnable games left. We’ve got to try and keep applying pressure on Horsham and (Preston) Nomads.”

Horsham won by seven wickets away to Roffey to move 32 points ahead of Priory albeit having played an extra game, while Nomads triumphed by eight wickets at Brighton & Hove to go 12 points above them.

Priory and Horsham are on their free week this weekend so Nomads - the champions for the last three years and four of the past five - can hit the front with victory away to fourth-placed East Grinstead.

“We’ll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season,” continued Finch. “There’s still lots and lots of twists and turns just yet. If you go into the last game of the season still in with a sniff, you’ve timed it right.”

Priory return to action next weekend with an all-important double header at home to relegation-threatened Three Bridges, for whom Sussex spinner Monty Panesar made his debut last weekend, and the Sussex Development XI.

Finch added: “We’re still a work in progress. That team is an exceptionally young team and we’re still learning. Winning the league is fantastic, but development of our young players is more important.”
