Horley 1sts made 209-6 in their 40 overs at Horley Row, with Regan Derham hitting a terrific 94 not out. Ben Davies was the next highest scorer with 36 while Richard Waddington, Ross Nel and Ben Remfry all made 18. Outwood were bowled out for 112 in reply to give Horley the win by 97 runs.

Away at Outwood, Horley 2nd XI elected to bat first and after a steady first 10 overs from openers Andrew Thomas and Sam Bracken there was a flurry of three quick wickets in three overs. That brought Aryan Patel and George Byles-Wilding in at four and five and they stopped the rot, with 16-year-old Patel making his first senior half-century for the club.

At the 20 over mark Horley were 78-4 after losing Byles-Wilding (13) but Patel stayed put to make 62 in 71 balls before he was caught by Lucas Evans off Simon Diacon.

Nick Waddington scored a steady 26 before being bowled and Rob Jamieson came in at the 36th over mark with Horley on 161-7 and hit 23 not out off 13 balls to take Horley’s total 188-7 after the full 40 overs. Diacon and Keith Hall both took two wickets.

Chris Cosham opened Horley’s bowling with three consecutive maidens and went for just nine runs in five overs. Jamieson, at the other end took two wickets in his third over, one bowled and one caught by Bracken, but then Outwood put on 75 for the third wicket.

Abdul Razzaq came into the attack and broke the partnership, bowling Lucas Evans for 36, then bowled Paul Tunstall in the same over.

Outwood’s Laurence Williams and Chris Preen stopped the rot, making 78 for the fifth wicket, before Darren Croft came on to bowl his second spell picking himself up a wicket caught by Kieran Childs, sending Williams out for 50. Outwood were now on 179-5 in the 34th over and got home with five wickets to spare, with Preen ending up on 78 not out.

Sunday’s cricket brought a winning double for Horley as the Sunday 1st XI beat Crawley Eagles by 40 runs and the Strollers won away at Lingfield by 25.

Sam Bracken top-scored for the Sunday 1sts with 58, while Sam Remfry made 45, Regan Derham 39 and Adam Stephenson 21 in a total of 225-7 from 40 overs.

Crawley Eagles could only reach 185-8 in their 40 overs. Chris Cosham was the pick of the Horley bowlers, taking three wickets for nine runs in four overs. Tom Clargo and Derham took two wickets each, with Derham only going for seven runs in three overs, and Bracken took one.

Kieran Childs had an excellent all-round game as Horley’s Sunday Strollers won away at Lingfield by 25 runs.

Opening the batting in the drizzle, he made 54 from 67 balls, including eight fours. Only four other Horley batsmen got into double figures, with Alex Field sticking with Childs for the longest to make 15. Skipper Dave Childs was left on 12 not out as the Strollers were all out for 133 in 29 overs, with Matt Cole, Paul Langton, James White and Gary Lynch all taking two wickets for Lingfield.

The young Horley side – which included five teenagers – knew it would be tricky to defend that total with Lingfield allowed a maximum of 51 overs to get there, but a combination of great cricket and an excellent team spirit earned them the win.

Evan Grimwood, aged 14, took the first wicket with the score on 24 – a skier caught by Andy Longley – then Dave Childs had Imtiaz Trask lbw before 13-year-old Bailey Warren ran out Lynch.

Field got Langton lbw and Jack Jee ran out Pat Cole to reduce Lingfield to 70-5, then Kieran Childs put Horley firmly in charge by taking three wickets in succession in a four-over spell which cost just four runs, one caught by Field.

Naveed Sherwani dismissed the last batsman thanks to a catch from Leon Watson.

Lingfield only had ten players but Horley were also reduced to ten in the 16th over of the second innings as Ben Payne went down in agony with an injured knee in the field and was taken to hospital. Thankfully no serious damage was done.

Horley Under-13s secured their first win of the season, beating Reigate Priory, who were playing their first match since cricket was allowed to begin.

Changing the batting line up to allow all the boys some time in the middle in these early matches proved valuable for Horley and the highlights of the innings were Luke Smith, the captain, retiring on 30 off just 17 deliveries and Bailey Warren scoring 26. A quick 10 from Aidan Spalding helped Horley’s score to 133-6 from 22 overs.

When Reigate batted, much-improved fielding from Horley from their first game, along with some very accurate bowling, earned them the win.

There were two wickets each for Warren and Henry Grimwood, and a run out from under-12s player Ollie Millard, who stepped into the side at the last minute when Reigate turned up with 12 players and wanting to give everyone a game.

The other fielding highlight was a fantastic stop/near catch by Daniel Sired who had one of his deliveries drilled straight back at him, but got his hands to it.

Reigate finished on 118-7 in what was a decent batting display on their first outing. Credit goes to both teams for playing the game in a great spirit and following the new ECB Covid-19 rules so the games can go ahead.

On what is normally the last weekend of the Under-10s cricketing fixtures, Horley welcomed Lingfield for their first game in 2020. Captain Jack James won the toss and decided to field on a grey morning. His decision seemed well justified with a good team effort of tight bowling backed up with energetic fielding that kept Lingfield to a score of 257. The pick of the bowling figures came in the form of Oscar Millard who after a season off due to dance commitments achieved an impressive double wicket maiden in his opening over.

Horley set about their reply cautiously, accumulating runs steadily before Jake Bardsley and Ollie Kilborn smashed 32 in their overs, Bardsley achieving cover drive perfection in his score of 20. This left Alfie Warden and James the responsibility to see the win through and their 31 partnership took Horley across the finish line.
