His bowlers managed to turn around a dire situation against Ashtead on Sunday, with Roffey having made a below-par 179-9 off their 45 overs.

Opener Josh Fleming made 44 and combined with Chris Webb (40) to put on 100 for the second wicket.

The skipper revealed: “We’d have liked to score more runs but it was a difficult wicket. At drinks we were 100-1 off 23 overs and were looking to reach 230 which would have been a really good score.

“The ground staff did really well to get the game on as a lot of rain had fallen running up to Saturday.

“Ashtead also made a good start and were 108-1 after 27 overs.

“Then all our five bowlers bowled well, especially the spinners Rohit Jagota, Matt Davies and Dan Smith and helped us get back into the game. Lee Harrison took three wickets which was crucial to our eventual success at the death.”

“We played well for the first half of our batting but collapsed and gave away the initiative. We got back into the game and it was a really good team effort in the field.”

This Saturday sees the start of the Sussex Cricket League, with Roffey hosting Eastbourne to kick off their campaign.
