Former Pulborough skipper Jagota joins Roffey

Classy hitter Rohit Jagota turned down a host of Sussex Premier League sides including Horsham to join Roffey Cricket Club.

The Indian right-hander is regarded as one of the best players in the Sussex League and said he was delighted to be making a return to the top flight.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Roffey, they are a good young side with also some experienced players,” Jagota said.

“I wanted to play Premier League cricket again and Roffey were interested, I already know a lot of their players.

“It was hard leaving Pulborough, probably my highlight was playing for them in the Premier League, but it felt like the right time to go.”

The arrival of Jagota will greatly strengthen Roffey’s batting line up, especially after they lost skipper and last season’s top scorer Mike Norris to Ifield.

Jagota should slot straight into the gap at the top of the order and is well known across the county for his consistently brilliant displays while captaining Pulborough.

He was top scorer in each of his seven seasons, scoring a quarter of the side’s total runs in that time with an average of 56.7.

He led Boro to promotion into the Sussex Premier League in 2011 and though they went straight back down he still managed an average just shy of 50.

Roffey vice captain Aaron Jeal believes the arrival of Jagota will help the club reach new heights.

“It’s a massive signing for us, he has proved how good he is every year at Pulborough, and he probably should have signed for us a long time ago,” he said.

“He has been at a club where he has been the main figure and they probably would not have progressed to the Premier League without him. We regard him as a top player.”

And he added: “His coaching is going to be huge for us. We lost a bit of that when we lost Mike Norris so to have someone like Rohit join is massive.”
