Portslade, who were promoted into Sussex League Division 3 last season, take on Division 2 side Worthing in the opening round of the Gray Nicolls Twenty20 Cup at Benfield Valley.

Paul is looking forward to his side testing themselves against Worthing and also playing against his brother. He said: “I’ve never played against him in a competitive match before but our family are all looking forward to it.

“It’s a big day for the club and it would be nice to get one over him. However, they are a very good team and have some very good players.

“It’s a real big test but it’s good preparation for us ahead of the league season.”

John added: “I took the job as captain here earlier this year and for this to be my first game in charge is really strange.

“I’ve only ever faced Paul in Sunday matches, so to face off against him will be strange.

“I’m sure the game will be a good one and I’m hoping that we can come out on top.”

Portslade have lost Alex Smith, who is travelling, and Luke Brant, who has moved away from the area, from last season’s squad.

They have brought in Australian overseas all-rounder Tom Mooney, who has played Sydney grade cricket for Mosman and Paul Glover said: “He’s an up-and-coming youngster and comes over with high regards. Hopefully, he’ll do well for us this year.”

On aims for the league season, Glover is hoping his side can consolidate in Division 3 this year and said: “Our aim is to consolidate this year and we still want to be playing in Division 3 next season.

“We said the same thing at the start of last season and, if you get on a good run, you never know what could happen. However, it’s a step up this season and we are going to lose games.

“We’ve got to make sure that we pick up decent bonus points when we lose and pick up big points when we win.”
