Glover wants to write off tough weekend

Burgess Hill proved too strong and as a result have leapfrogged Paul Glover’s side to take top-spot in Division 3.

After being asked to bowl, Portslade struggled to stop the flow of runs with Jack Simpson (82) and Nathan Cooper (56) ensuring Hill reached 223 for nine before declaring after 52.4 overs.

Opening bowlers Alex Smith and Andrew Mamoany both took three wickets for Portslade but that failed to hold Burgess Hill’s batters back.

With a tricky score to chase down, slipping to 22-3 then 58-5 left Portslade with it all to do. Late runs from skipper Glover (37) helped his side reach three figures before they were bowled out for 111 in 34.4 overs, falling to a 112-run defeat.

Dan Strange led Hill’s attack well and finished with figures of 4-30 in 11 overs.

Glover felt his side were outplayed on the day and said: “We were beaten by the better team on the day.

“They started well with the bat and though we pegged it back for a little while, they still went on to post a decent score.

“We felt in the game but a dreadful batting display cost us in the end.”

Things did not get any better for Portslade a day later as they were dumped out of the Gray-Nicolls T20 Cup in the third-round following a six-wicket defeat at fellow Division 3 side Findon.

This time Glover won the toss and batted but his side were 20 to 30 runs short of a competitive total.

Portslade posted 132 for seven from their allotted overs, with Glover (31 not out) and Steven Case (33) bagging some late runs to get them to that total.

Findon skipper Bradley Bridson got his side off to a flyer with 30 from 14 balls, before an unbeaten 41 from his brother, Glen, guided Findon to victory with 27 balls left.

Once again, his side’s display did not please Glover, who said: “We didn’t manage to get away in those first six overs, while they started really well.

“We were happy at halfway, though, I think a few more runs would have given us a lot more of a chance.

“Their skipper (Bradley Bridson) got them going in the first six, then Glen (Bridson) came in and took the game away from us.”
