Lewis Hatchett took three wickets in the first over - including two with the first two balls - as East Grinstead blew reigning champions Roffey away for just 52.

Hatchett finished with 6-24 and Ian Sturmer 4-27 before Will Adkin hit 48 not out as Grinstead triumphed by 10 wickets.

It’s not the first time Grinstead have hammered Roffey by 10 wickets. Last season they bowled the champions out for 62 with Carl Cachopa doing the damage that time round with 8-29.

Skipper Darryl Rebbetts said: “We didnt expect it to be that easy but last year we bowled them out for 62 so there is a similarity to last year’s win.

“We definitely got the best of the conditions. We knew it was going to be a bit drizzly for half an hour to 45 minutes so it was a good toss to win.

“But we obviously had to put the ball in the right areas and I think we were in a very positive frame of mind which saw us take three wickets in the first over.”

Hatchett removed Josh Fleming, Liam Gibson and Chris Webb in that devastating first over.

Theo Rivers (19) and Rohit Jagota (23) then staged the smallest of recoveries before Sturmer removed the latter.

Sturmer then accounted for Roffey skipper Davies before Rivers departed to become Hatchett’s fourth victim.

Roffey were now 45-6. And that soon became 52 all out with Sturmer claiming the wickets of Daniel Smith and George Fleming and Hatchett removing Alex Collins and Leigh Harrison.

Hatchett finished with figures of 11-3-24-6 and Sturmer 11-3-27-4.

In reply, Will Adkin took full control and smashed 45 of the 52 needed to win with eight 4s and two 6s.

Alex Evans weighed in with 11 not out.

The win puts Grinstead fifth behind Horsham, Cuckfield, Bexhill and Preston Nomads.

Grinstead are without Hatchett as they host Brighton and Hove on Saturday.

Rebbetts said: “We have no Lewis on Saturday which is a shame and there’s still no Fynn (Hudson-Prentice).

“Hopefully we will go into the game on Saturday with confidence but without Lewis it will be a little bit different but we back ourselves to get a result against Brighton.”

East Grinstead 2nd XI lost to Roffey by six wickets after being bowled out for 100.
