They lost by 55 runs but it was a thoroughly enjoyable game played in excellent spirit.

Tight opening spells from Mike Galitzine (2-24) and Lara Bennett (0-6) meant it was a cautious start from the Willingdon openers.

With both openers run out trying to keep the scoreboard moving along, and with regular bowling changes, the Willingdon middle order found scoring easier.

Duncan Ray (70) foundsupport from Ryan Packham (27) among others to lift their total to 176-7.

Herstmonceux’s top order did not get going against bowlers Liam Page (3-9) and Chris Luard (2-20) and found themselves 11-4.

Hadon Westerby put some momentum into the innings with 50 from 22 balls but played himself out, rather than in, and left too much for Charlie Moon (22) to do with the tail.

Herstmonceux were ahead of the run rate for most of their innings, but lost wickets too quickly and were all out for 121 in 21 overs.

Chairman Alan Smith said: “Despite the short season there have been some personal highlights.

“Nick Toomey’s 26 wickets deserve mention, 12 50s from seven different players, and attracting both new and returning players bodes well.

“Covid permitting we will be back to winter coaching in the new year and looking to field three senior teams.”

For Hailsham, MoM Jason Wickham (31) batted well but others had no joy.

Flimwell v Battle

For the first time, Battle travelled to Flimwell – and it was an excellent fixture in the spirit of friendly but competitive cricket.

Battle struggled to get away against a tight opening attack of Squires and Deguingand.

Will Paine (2-27) and James Knight (2-29) did some damage, but Stuart Reeves managed to get his drives working in a good 39, while Laurence Flint (25) and Rex Ffrench (12) added impetus in the middle order.

The long-limbed smiting of Roger Soan (17) also helped give the visitors a score of 142-8 – which looked competitive.

The match was probably decided by a strong opening stand of 65 between Simon Murphy (35) and Marcus Deguingand (58). Soan (2-20), in a fine spell of his own, provoked a miscue from Murphy for Jago Truscott to take a catch at point, and Battle were able to take wickets at roughly ten-run intervals.

Flint trapped Deguingand lbw but Flimwell had enough left to get home with James Knight (16*) steering them to victory with four wickets left as they won with 143-6.

Pett v Crowhurst

Crowhurst travelled to Pett with hopes high that a good team performance would bring a positive result.

Putting Pett into bat, Crowhurst started well and with Sam Woodham taking 6-23 and they restricted Pett to 143 all out.

Expectations among the crowd were high, but a spectacular batting collapse ensued and not one Crows batsmen could stem the flow, leaving them all out for 66.

Winchelsea looked to be struggling at 8-2. A third-wicket partnership of 129 put it back in Winchelsea’s favour before Patrick Wood (62) was bowled by A Mitchell.

A partnership of 60 ended when Simon Wheeler (24) fell to Mitchell, who finished with 2-37. Jon Peters was caught off the bowling of Ben Larkin (1-18) having scored 114.

Sidleyproduced a competitive performance in defeat by higher-grade Dicker in a friendly.

There were plenty of positives for Steve Ramsden’s side in a creditable 54-run loss at Claremont School.

Fielding first, Sidley looked to be staring down the barrel of chasing a huge target as Dicker moved swiftly to 71-0. But Hollie Young began a spirited recovery with two wickets in an over, the first thanks to a great catch by Jacob McDonough at gully.

And the upturn in fortunes continued as wickets for Ryan Polton (2-19), Paul Oxborrow (1-10) and Trevor Ramsden (1-18), plus a McDonough run out, reduced Dicker to 134-7. Aided by a 19-run over, however,Dicker rallied to post 182-7.

Sidley slumped to 11-3 in reply. Young (18), Cavan O’Connor (20), Simon Newstead (13), Oxborrow (19) and McDonough (19) fared well but Sidley were all out for 128.
