Horley blown away by high-flying Claygate

Claygate put Horley into bat and a first wicket partnership of 25 got the hosts off to a reasonable start before George Byles-Wilding edged one to keeper Sapsed for the first of his three catches.

Facing quick, hostile bowling, skipper Elliott Strode went for a duck before Dave Hyde (20) was also sent packing.

Trevor Stevens and newcomer Rashid Burki both made ten before the entry of Sri Lanka Under-18 bowler Junior Da Silva, who proved almost unplayable.

He reeled off five consecutive maidens and took two wickets for four runs from 6.1 overs. Craig MacFarlane, coolness personified denied an early closure of the innings by hanging ont for 45 deliveries.

Clearly 73 was never going to be enough of a target for Horley to defend and Claygate’s openers, Wijetunga (48 not out) and Ross (23 not out) took their team to victory in just 11.5 overs.

Claygate were without three regular first teamers and have a further four university boys due back soon, so they must be seeking honours in this division as they have won all four games to date. Horley meanwhile remain winless in what is going to be a challenging season after they lost several key players since last year.

New players are welcome to join the Horley club, which has excellent facilities and one of the best grounds in Surrey. Senior nets and training takes place on Thursday evenings.

Newdigate u10s v Horley u10s, Saturday 28 May, East Surrey Colts League.

Horley 233 for five, Newdigate 326 for 0.

Newdigate, last year’s league winners, put Horley into bat and their strong bowling attack made it difficult to get the ball off the square.

Man of the Match Evan Grimwood top-scored for Horley with 11, with good support from Erin Gooch, before Hugo Hobbs and Bailey Warren wrapped up the winnings with some entertaining shots.

Horley’s total of 233 for five was a low one, so although they bowled well and only conceded seven wides in their 20 overs, Newdigate still won comfortably. The home side had four exceptional batsmen and were able to reach an excellent total of 326 for the loss of no wickets.

Cameron Money bowled a nice over in only his second match and Warren gave away just seven runs from his three overs, while Hobbs bowled the only maiden.

Horley are improving and making fewer mistakes but need to find a way to score more runs.

West End Esher 2nd XI v Horley 2nd XI, 28 May.

West End Esher 252 for two, Horley 160 all out

A superb innings of 152 not out by West End Esher batsman M O’Halloran set up a big win over Horley. O’Halloran, who is usually a first-teamer, entered the fray with the score reading 38 for two and put together an undefeated third-wicket partnership of 214 with Toor (68).

Horley skipper Darren Croft used seven bowlers to try and part the pair but nothing doing. Andy Longley and son Archie got the two wickets to fall.

Horley made 160 in their reply and lost the match by 92 runs but the development of the players stepping up into the team from Horley colts shone through as Sam Remfry made 81 in good time. He was one of five under-15s playing in the second XI this week, with another, Zach Collins, making an impressive senior debut.

Horley u11s v Capel u11s, Horley Row, Monday 23 May, East Surrey Cup.

Horley 229-8, Capel 272-3

Horley were knocked out of the East Surrey Cup by a Capel side who were simply better in all areas.

The home side were put into bat and only managed to score 39 runs off the bat, losing eight wickets on the way, including two crazy run-outs. Capel’s bowling was accurate and disciplined and Horley were unable to get into their stride. The best partnership of the innings was 20 by Leah Lane and Taylor Whelan.

With a very modest total of 229 to defend, Horley’s bowling and fielding had to be of a high standard. The bowling was better than in previous weeks, but six overthrows were conceded and Capel proved much sharper at running sensible quick singles and playing defensively when required.

Joe English, Udith Molanguri and Lane took a wicket apiece, but Capel won comfortably.

Sanderstead Under-13s v Horley Under-13s, East Surrey Cup, Sunday, 22 May

Sanderstead 91 for nine, 20 overs, Horley 99 for six.

Horley Under-13s took a break from league action and played in two very competitive cup games.

They lost in the second round of the County Cup but made up for that with an East Surrey Cup win over Sanderstead which puts them through to the semi-finals.

Max Hawley and Jack Jee batted well for Horley to help them to a total of 99. Zack Collins opened the bowling and took two wickets with his first two balls and Sanderstead were soon three wickets down with no runs on the board after a good over from Oliver Sturt.

Sanderstead then found some form and the game was finely poised going into the last three overs, however, a good all-round bowling and fielding performance enabled Horley to hang on for the win.

East Grinstead v Horley, Sunday 22 May, Surrey Trust League.

Horley 107 all out, East Grinstead 111 for three.

East Grinstead bowler Jack Williams ripped through the Horley batting order, taking five for 17 from his eight overs. The visitors only managed to score 21 runs from their first ten overs, with Adam Stephenson making a patient 24 but the rest of the top order struggling.

The tail wagged as number eight Joey Brickwood made ten, Jordan Robins 12 and Andrew Thomas 16, but Horley were bowled out for 107 on the last ball of their 40 overs. Jacob McLaughlin took three for 21.

The hosts lost three early wickets, with Michael Thomas taking two for 20 and Chris Cosham one for 19, before Simon Faulkner hit 58 not out in good time to take East Grinstead to victory. Horley didn’t help their own cause by bowling 29 wides.

Horley Strollers v Mynthurst, Horley Row, Sunday 22 May.

Horley 62 all out, Mynthurst 64 for 0.

The Horley Strollers had a hiccough at home against near neighbours Mynthurst, losing by ten wickets.

They were reduced to 19 for five before Dave Childs made a typical 20 with stubborn belligerence. No other batsmen managed to reach double figures but Andy Gainsford held up an end with a sparkling nine from 38 balls. Wickets were shared around the Mynthurst attack with four bowlers bagging a brace.

Mynthurst then gained bragging rights as Alexander and Ryman knocked the target of 64 from just 14.4 overs.
