Notts ended Sunday’s opening day strongly on 358-5 with James Taylor unbeaten on 163 and Chris Read still in on 54 having shared in an unbroken sixth wicket partnership of 172.

Lewis said: “We need to eat well, sleep well and come back and try again.

“We need to get someone out quickly and open an end up. They’ve got four guys at the back 8, 9, 10 and 11 whose batting pedigree isn’t great but they can obviously hold a bat - they got a few runs at Trent Bridge so we hope there is no repeat of that.

“Hopefully we can push on tomorrow and do a little bit better than today.

“In an ideal world they scored a bit quicker than we would have liked. I think 300 for seven or eight wickets would have been about par.

“But it’s very hard to judge without having a chance to see us have a bat and then bowl.

“When you win the toss and bat that’s more of a long-term decision. They picked two spinners (Samit Patel and Gary Keedy) and so did we (Luke Wells and Peter Burgoyne) so that suggests they thought the pitch would take spin as the match goes on.”

Lewis praised top wicket-taker Ollie Robinson for taking 4-81 from 24 overs.

“Ollie was excellent. He bowled uphill into the wind all day and has put the ball in an excellent area as he has done all season.

“He’s a phenomenal find for us and he’s one for the future, he’s only a young lad (21) and with some good winter’s work into him he’ll come back bigger and stronger next year and do even better.”

Lewis also praised the Nottinghamshire batsmen for building a bigger than expected first day score.

“We must give credit where it’s due to Taylor and Wessels in particular they put their team in a strong position.”

Notts’ batsmen enjoyed a resounding comeback after three early wickets when damp conditions from an early morning downpour had put them on the back foot at 30-3.

Taylor dug in first with Riki Wessels to put on 144 for the fifth wicket which ended when the son of former Sussex, South Africa and Australia opener Kepler Wessels getting caught by Luke Wells off Robinson.

Taylor remained in over two and a half sessions to reach 163 not out and shared in two sizeable partnerships with Wessels and Chris Read (54 not out) to leave Sussex chasing boundaries more and more as the day went on.

The second day’s play starts tomorrow at Horsham Cricket Club at 11am.
