It was a tough day for us – Glover

The season had started well for Glover with a Gray-Nicolls Twenty20 Cup win against Portslade and then emphatic league wins against Ifield and Ansty.

However, Hastings proved to be too strong for Worthing and Glover’s side fell to their first loss of the season.

After being asked to bowl first, Worthing struggled and 70 runs in the final ten overs saw Hastings reach 251 for eight from 53 overs.

With such a big score to chase down, Worthing needed to build partnerships but that did not happen as Glover top-scored with 49 as his side were all out for just 149.

Glover admitted it was a difficult day for his side and said: “That was definitely my worst day as captain of this side.

“They got off to a quick start and that caught us unaware. We have been bowling sides out for less than 100 and then knocking the runs off pretty quickly.

“That was not the case on Saturday, though. They teed off in the closing overs to get up to 250.

“We felt we had enough in the dressing room to chase it down but regular wickets fell and we fell way short.

“I think that just showed our inexperience at this level a little bit.

“Obviously, it’s still very earlydoors in the season but it’s never nice to lose.

“Full credit to Hastings, though, they deserved the victory.”

Hastings openers Joe Billings (36) and Elliott Hooper (41) gave their side a solid start to the game.

They continued to make steady progress throughout, before Jake Woolley hit a quickfire 45 and John Morgan made 37 from 41 balls as Hastings posted a total of 251 for eight in 53 overs.

Nick Ballamy took four for 58 from ten overs for Worthing.

Matthew Green got Worthing off to a flying start in their reply as he smashed 25 from 25 balls, before he was first man out with the score on 36.

His opening partner, Josh Wood, made 26 but Worthing lost six wickets for just 25 runs as they fell to 87-7.

That became 99-8 and 104-9, before Glover managed to add some late runs, with 49 from 66 balls which included seven fours and a six, as Worthing were all out for 149.

Jed O’Brien took five for 33 from 12 overs for Hastings.

Worthing host Crowhurst Park on Saturday.
