Machan makes impressive debut

One of Hastings Priory’s title heroes made quite an impact on his LV County Championship debut.

Matt Machan had his first Division One outing for Sussex in their final game of the season away to Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

With Sussex having secured their place in the top flight by winning away to Worcestershire on Saturday, the 20-year-old was given the chance to show what he could do in a four-day game which began on Monday.

Machan, a left-handed batsman, scored 71 off 97 balls with 13 fours in the first innings. After coming in at 190-4, Machan shared in a fifth wicket partnership of 114 with centurion Murray Goodwin.

He had previously made two first class appearances against Oxford MCCU and Cambridge MCCU, scoring 99 against the former, and had two list A outings against the Bangladeshis and Indians, hitting 56 against the latter.

Brighton-born Machan has been a leading performer for Sussex seconds this summer, as well as helping Priory clinch the Sussex League title with 726 runs at an average of 66 with four fifties and two hundreds.
