Mohsin and Budd rescue Littlehampton

A LAST-wicket stand of more than 100 helped Littlehampton Cricket Club to draw at Pagham on Saturday (May 26).

Littlehampton won the toss and batted in the Sussex League Division 3 West clash but crashed from 60-2 to 95-9, before Amjad Mohsin and Ryan Budd saved their innings with a club record 10th-wicket stand of 111.

That lifted Littlehampton to 206-9 on which they declared three balls early and Pagham then finished their reply on 201-9 – the third game in a row that Littlehampton have had the opposition nine wickets down but the first that they have not lost.

Littlehampton captain Dan Rive said: “At 95-9, we should have lost but Ryan and Amjad both batted very well with a club record stand for the 10th wicket.

“They got together in the 27th or 28th over when the rest of us were all ready to jump off the balcony in despair but they got us up to 206-9.

“We then had Pagham 72-6 and should have turned the screw and won the game but the track got easier to bat on in both innings as the ball got older and both tails wagged.”

Pagham went into the last over of the game needing six to win with one wicket left. Sean Rutter was 42 not out and on strike, with Chris Heberlein the bowler. Rive positioned his fielders deep in the outfield to prevent boundaries and Rutter managed just a single off the first delivery, before Heberlein then bowled five dot balls to No 11 Richard Bird

Earlier in the day, Littlehampton had made a steady start to their innings, with Michael Askew (26), Amit Midha (18) and Heberlein (17) all getting starts.

A middle-order collapse left Littlehampton’s innings in all sorts of trouble, before Mohsin struck 50 from 70 balls, with eight fours, and Budd hit 51 off 94 deliveries, with nine fours.

Heberlein got an early breakthrough in Pagham’s innings when Graham Finlayson fell for a duck and they soon slipped to 36-4.

Wayne Green then came in and, after two more wickets fell, put on 71 for the seventh wicket with Sam Dickins. Green fell for a 64-ball 65 with the score on 143 and Dickins then added 49 for the eighth wicket with Rutter. Dickins (27) and Peter Cotterill (0) fell in quick succession with Pagham 14 runs short of victory and they ended their innings six runs short of success.

Heberlein finished with 4-54 off 15 overs, while Budd and Rive both took two wickets.

Littlehampton host Steyning on Saturday.
