Mayfield v Cuckfield

August Cup

Despite the forecast predicting upwards of 33C, a tinge of green on the Mayfield pitch led Cuckfield to bowl after winning the toss in the August Cup.

Opening pair Abi Sakande and Joe White found a good line and length from the first over, but wickets eluded them until Mayfield captain Ben Fitchet was caught off White for 23.

Cuckfield’s first-change bowlers Nick Patterson and Josh Hayward bowled tighter lines to keep the run rate below five. The two took a wicket each before Greg Wisdom and Ben Candfield entered the fray.

Candfield picked up Edward Finch for 29 as Wisdom took regular wickets including top-scorer Harry Lloyd for 51. Two impressive catches in the deep helped Wisdom to figures of 5-36 and keep Mayfield to 224-9.

The Cuckfield innings began shakily with four of the top five reaching double figures but none passing 15. After the fall of the fourth wicket, with Cuckfield on just 63, a successful chase seemed a long way off.

However, Chris Mole and captain Ben Candfield proceeded to stabilise and drag their side back into it. Mayfield changed their bowlers around but to no effect as the partnership grew.
