Overseas fast bowler jets in to bolster Horsham CC’s attack

The 21-year-old has made 26 first-class appearances, taking 74 wickets and plays for Cape Cobras, and will lead the Horsham bowling attack alongside Stuart Whittingham this season.

The wet weather at the weekend denied Travis a first appearance at Cricketfield Road, with both the Saturday friendly against Eastbourne and then Sunday’s National Club Championship game against Sutton rained off without a ball being bowled.

Horsham will now start their competitive season against local side Slinfold in the Gray Nicholls T20 Cup this Saturday and then host Sutton in the National KO Cup on the Sunday.

Sam Attfield, who has taken over the captaincy from Craig Gallagher, said: “Travis arrived on Friday and I’m told he’s a very promising fast bowler.

“Although we weren’t able to play at all over the weekend he’s met all the squad and integrated very well. He’s just finished the season with Cape Cobras so should be right on it from the start.

“He will open the bowling with Stuart Whittingham which should be a promising partnership. Having good fast bowlers to open the attack is a big advantage, especially in this league so hopefully both will take lots of wickets.”

Last season’s leading wicket taker Michael Munday will again offer his expert brand of spin, along with Will Beer when he’s not on Sussex duty.

With regular wicketkeeper Sam Bell currently out after injuring himself playing rugby for Horsham, Tom Johnson will keep wicket in the opening matches.

Opening batsman James Jonhson should only miss the first three games before returning from University.

After opening away at Bexhill on Saturday May 3, Horsham have two tricky league fixtures against Hastings (home) and Preston Nomads (away) in successive weekends.
