Wernars, who signed for the county before the start of the 2011 season, played two LV=County Championship games and five Clydesdale Bank 40 matches this summer, making vital scores of 35 and 37 not out in the CB40 games against Derbyshire and Warwickshire respectively.

He scored heavily with the bat as he captained the Sussex second XI, with the highlight an unbeaten 152 against Ireland ‘A’ at The Sutton Winson Academy Ground, Blackstone.

Wernars, who is spending some of the winter playing club cricket in South Africa, said: “I am extremely happy to be signing an extension with Sussex.

“Since joining the club in 2011, I feel my game has come a very long way and I have grown as a cricketer. For the 2013 season I am hoping to be a good asset for the team both on and off the cricket field.”
