Priory ace signs new Sussex deal

Young all-rounder Kirk Wernars - who played such a key role in Hastings Priory’s title-winning season - has secured a new two-year deal with Sussex CCC.

Wernars, who turned 20 this summer, broke into the first XI squad on a number of occasions throughout the season, playing in three LV=County Championship matches and also featuring in the Friends Life t20.

He scored heavily with the bat in the second XI, as well as taking wickets with the ball and has been rewarded for his efforts with a contract which will see him remain at The PROBIZ County Ground until at least the end of the 2013 season.

Wernars said: “It’s fantastic for me to sign a new contract and I’m really excited to be here for another two years. This season was a learning curve and it was great to see how the club operates both on and off the field.

“I’ve now got time to re-assess and improve my game over the winter, and I’ll be aiming to make more of an impact in the first team across all three formats next season.”

Sussex’s professional cricket manager Mark Robinson said: “Kirk has shown early signs that he has it in him to be a very good all-rounder in future years for the club and we are delighted that he has committed himself for a further two years.”

Wernars, from Cape Town in South Africa, played in nine of Priory’s Sussex Premier matches and scored 499 runs at an average of 71.29 including a crucial 72 in the final day title decider against Horsham. He also took 11 wickets.
