Priory pull off brilliant win over Nomads

Harry Scowen scored his maiden Sussex Premier League half-century with the bat before Adam Barton’s four wickets with the ball helped Priory to an 88-run win.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Priory battled their way to 183-7 from 53 overs at Horntye Park.

Joe Lamb was caught behind with the score just seven, but Tom Gillespie (40) and Josh Hahnel (14) continued their excellent form from the previous game against Billingshurst during a second wicket partnership of 53.

Both men fell with the score 60, however, and James Pooley departed for a duck just a run later. When Jake Woolley also went without scoring, Priory had suddenly gone from 60-1 to 70-5.

Number seven Scowen masterminded the recovery, firstly during an important sixth wicket stand of 58 with number four Elliot Hooper (35).

Jed O’Brien chipped in with 10 off 12 balls before talented youngster Scowen and John Morgan (15 not out) finished the innings with unbroken eighth wicket stand of 34, Scowen ending on 58 not out from 79 balls with four fours and a six.

Priory proceeded to bowl Nomads out for just 95 in 35.1 overs, with only one batsman scoring more than 14.

Barton (9.1-2-20-4) set the ball rolling by dismissing Oliver Gatting for a 10-ball duck with the score just two. Number three Tim Moses also went without scoring, lbw to Bradley Payne (8-1-23-2), to leave Nomads 13-2.

Barton dismissed Daniel Phillips (14) in the same fashion to make it 26-3. Priory’s spinners then started to make their mark, Hooper (5-1-11-2) bowling Nomads skipper Jeremy Green (7) and O’Brien (9-2-32-2) doing the same to James Wilkes-Green (1) three runs later as the visitors slumped to 45-5.

Hooper ended the resistance of top scorer Dominic Shepheard (25) 10 runs later and 10 runs after that, Barton returned to pick up the seventh wicket, bowling Kashif Ibrahim for 10.

Payne had Carl Simon caught by Barton for 12 to make it 79-8 before the final two wickets fell with the score 95, James McKemey lbw to O’Brien for 13 and Owen Kernan bowled by Barton for three.

Following their third win in as many completed home league matches this season, Priory remain seventh in the table, but are now 45 points above the two relegation places with a game in hand.
