They have acquired two new recruits, both from Slinfold, in bowler Harrison Webb and wicketkeeper Matt Shuttlewood.

The latter replaces Liam Hume, who is away for two seasons, and Baker believes they have built a squad more than capable of competing in Division 4 after their third-place finish last season.

Baker, who starts his first full campaign as skipper, said: “The ambition is definitely promotion and with the new two signings, hopefully one better and go for the title.

“We have managed to build a title-winning side over the winter and one that is good enough to do that. It’s about applying it now.

“Last year we came third after being in the bottom three after seven games. Both ourselves and Slinfold had big turnarounds last year, so it shows anything can happen.”

On their new recruits, Baker added: “We have two big arrivals in Matt Shuttlewood and Harrison Webb. I played with Matt a few years ago at Broadbridge Heath and he is an exceptional keeper and can also score runs.

“Harrison is a huge wicket taker, he takes wicket every game and 25 to 30 a season.”

There have been no departures from the club, although ex-first XI player Greg Young has become captain of the second team.

Southwater start their season with an intriguing derby Gray-Nicholls T20 derby at Slinfold on Saturday.

Baker added: “We are missing quite a few players. A couple have football commitments and I am at a wedding, but the weekend after against West Chiltington.”
