Relief for Maynard as Goring earn tie

Maynard felt his side’s total of 136 was below-par but his side performed well in the field and Aaron Wyatt dismissed Rilwan Mohamed lbw for 19 after a last-wicket stand of eight to tie the game.

Goring’s skipper said: “It was quite a relief in the end. We brought the field in to build the pressure and had a few appeals for their last wicket, before Aaron got their batsman right on his pads.

“Our total was below-par on any pitch but we still thought that it would be quite competitive and we backed ourselves to get all of their wickets.”

Goring were put into bat after losing the toss and Robin Marriott was bowled by Imran Mehboob for one, with the score on six.

Sam Thorns (15) and Alex Maynard (22) put on 32 for the second wicket, before they fell in quick succession and Dan Pittham’s dismissal for two left Goring 50 for four.

Chris Bird and Ben Timms both fell for 14 as Eagles reduced Goring to 74 for six.

Ellis Woolley and Matt Keen steadied the innings with a 48-run stand for the seventh wicket, before Usman Bashir dismissed both – Woolley for 22 and Keen for 27 – to leave Goring 127 for eight.

The final two wickets quickly fell as Goring were all out for 136 in 45.3 overs. Bashir led the way with the ball and took three for seven from 4.3 overs, while Mehboob picked up three for 23 from 12 overs.

Keen starred with the ball for Goring and took the wicket of Eagles captain Amaar Suddasahai – caught by Timms – for 11, with the score on 13.

Azam Riyard (23) and Fazlan Nizamdeen (16) shared a 43-run stand for the second wicket, before Riyard was run out by Aaron Wyatt as five wickets fell for six runs to leave Eagles 62 for six.

Keen had Usman Bashir (16) caught by Wyatt and then dismissed Anjum Zafer (19) to reduce Eagles to 104 for eight.

Atif Ali was caught and bowled by Keen for 18 after a 24-run ninth-wicket stand to make the score 128-9.

Rilwan Mohamed and Mehboob levelled the score with a eight-run last-wicket partnership before, with Goring’s fielders in, Wyatt dismissed Mohamed to tie the game.

Keen finished with six for 38 from 22 overs and Woolley took two for 64 from 16 overs.

Goring travel to Burgess Hill on Saturday.
