Roffey and Horsham open new cricket season with wins

Both Roffey and Horsham enjoyed winning starts to the new Sussex Cricket League season on Saturday.

Roffey won away at Brighton & Hove by two wickets while Horsham began their league campaign with a 104-run home win over Chichester Priory, inspired by spinners Will Beer and Michael Munday.

Away at Brighton, four wickets from Rohit Jagota helped restrict the hosts to 152-9. In reply a good partnership from Jagota (38) and Matt Davies put them on course before a collapse had them eight wickets down and needing number nine batsman Alex Southon to hold his nerve to knock off the winning runs.

Roffey skipper Josh Fleming said: “It was good to get a win, we didn’t play our best cricket but conditions were pretty difficult so it was just nice to come away with the win. It’s the first time we’ve been to Brighton and won, we got turned over quite badly last season so I’ve very happy with that.”

At Cricketfield Road, opening batsman Ben Shoare hit 70 with Sam Attfield adding 37, before four wickets in four balls from Richard Browning saw Horsham collapse to 189 all out.

Chichester’s reply was going well at 52-1 before leg spinners Beer (4-9) and Munday (4-19) came in to destroy their batting order, sharing eight wickets to skittle them out for just 85.
