Rustington cricket star is bowled over by tributes

AFTER more than 60 years of dedication, Rustington cricket legend Brian Norris has finally packed away his bails and bowling spikes.

Bowler Brian, of Mill Road, Angmering, who has been involved in all aspects of Rustington Cricket Club during his time there, was honoured at a presentation evening at the Rustington Sports and Social Club, where the 81-year-old was praised for his “outstanding and unceasing dedication, service and loyalty”.

Chairman of the cricket club, Richard Mann, hailed Brian for his years of service, and as one of the most respected players, comparing his cricket career to that of former England fast bowler, the late Fred Trueman.

Medium-fast bowler Brian began playing for the village in 1949, at the age of 18, making his debut against Wadhurst.

He went on to rack up an impressive 2,500 wickets, with a career-best of 10 wickets from 38 runs, in 1953 against Findon.

Brian said of the evening: “This was an amazing experience.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing cricket for Rustington and this is certainly one of my highlights.”

Brian played cricket competitively for about 50 years.

His commitment to the club extended off the pitch too, serving as a committee member for 60 years, secretary, club president and skipper of the first and second team for 30 years.

Organisations further afield also benefited from Brian’s experience – he served as vice-president of the now-defunct Worthing & District Cricket Association and of the Sussex Cricket Association.

Rustington Parish Council chairman Andy Cooper presented Brian with his trophy for his years of dedicated service. He said: “It was a great honour to present the award to an individual who had played such an integral part in the development and progress of the cricket club, over the years.”

Brian will remain as the club’s secretary until December and added that he would continue to follow its progress next season.
