Craig Pierce took five wickets and Kshemal Waingankar four as Rye triumphed by four wickets in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera on Saturday.

The game was delayed by an hour due to heavy, persistent rain, which meant it was reduced to a 49/43 overs per side contest. Rye captain Gary Willis won the toss and elected to bowl first on a damp wicket.

Keymer got off to a good start, reaching 30 without loss, before Waingankar made the breakthrough. It then became the Pierce and Waingankar show as together they reduced the visitors to 61-8.

Rye were cruising at this point, but James Pitt (20) and Alex Brakell (27) compiled a solid 50-run partnership to take Keymer into three figures.

Ben Clifton was brought into the attack and broke the partnership instantly. Keymer were all out for 117 having been blown away by Pierce (5-20) and Waingankar (4-34).

Rye got off to a steady start in reply until losing Clifton and James Hamilton with the score 18. And when Rye slipped to 27-3, it all looked rather worrying.

Dan Seabrook (38) and Will Wheeler (33) joined together to put Rye back in the driving seat, although 86-3 soon became 87-5 as Seabrook and Wheeler were removed one after the other.

Mark Cook (6) and Mickey Toomey (16 not out) batted patiently to move Rye close to victory. Nerves jangled when Cook was bowled with the score 105, but Toomey knocked off the final runs.

Rye will be aiming to make it two out of two when they travel to Wisborough Green tomorrow (Saturday), the first of several lengthy trips they will face this summer.
