Scott blasts Henfield’s batting display in Mayfield defeat

Henfield captain Adam Scott blasted his side’s batting display as they crashed to a five-wicket defeat at hotly-tipped Mayfield in Division 4.

Scott, opening the batting after they lost the toss and were inserted, was the only man to make significant runs as his 55 helped them to 106 in 39.5 overs.

Harry Stewart (16) and William Culver (15) were the only other two to make double figures as Mayfield’s overseas Marno Pretorius claimed 4-30 and William Collard took 3-32.

In reply, Mayfield chipped off the total for the loss of five wickets as Sam Hyne (40) and Harry Lloyd (28) led the way in their score of 109.

Brighton Mugochi finished with figures of 3-29.

Scott said: “Indeed, it was tricky batting conditions on a green pitch and the ball swinging a long way throughout but it was a very disappointing performance.

“We did well in building ourselves a platform again as we had done against Stirlands the previous week, but fell from 82-2 shortly after drinks to 106 all out which simply isn’t good enough at this level if we want to be competing at the top.

“We fought well in the second innings but just didn’t have enough runs to play with. Even a score of 150/60 I feel it could have been a very interesting game and possibly a different and more positive result for us.”

Mayfield have been tipped for the Division 4 title this year, but Scott added: ““I wouldn’t say Mayfield were any stronger or weaker than any of the other teams in the league and I think they will rely heavily on overseas Pretorius.

“(They are) a good side, but one we feel we could have quite easily beaten on a different day so looking forward to playing them again later in the season.”
