Steyning close the gap to promotion places

David Kennett’s team served up another impressive display as they cruised to a 87-run win at Horsham’s 2nd XI.

After deciding to bat first, a half-century from Hywel Jones and Oliver Collins’ 43 helped them post 231-7 from their 45 overs.

A solid effort with the ball then saw Owain Jones take four wickets, while Andy Isaacs and Isaac Tidley both took two as Horsham were all out for 148 in 39.3 overs.

Slinfold replaced Goring at the top of the table on Saturday and Steyning now trail second-placed Goring, who they host on Saturday, by three points.

Steyning skipper Kennett was satisfied with another league victory and said: “I was very pleased we managed to pick up another win. Other results went for us as well, so it has put us in contention at the top.

“The next four weeks we have a difficult run of matches against teams who are at the top of this division. I think these next four games could well define where we manage to finish this season.”

Steyning made a solid start after Kennett took the decision to bat first.

Opener Hywel Jones top-scored with 55, while Collins chipped in with 43 as they reached 116-3.

Steyning’s middle-order batters found things tricky, leaving them 177-6, but late innings runs from Bartholomew Poyser (31 not out) ensured his side posted 231-7 off their allotted 45 overs.

Horsham openers Rhys Becwith (seven) and Sam Bell (two) came and went quickly to leave them 27-2.

Tom Clark (33) and Andrew Hillman (37) stuck around as they looked to rebuild for their side.

Horsham had a slight wobble, slipping to 94-4, before Steyning turned the sword.

The home side lost three wickets for just nine runs and fell well short in the end as they were bundled out for 148.

Owain Jones took 4-21, while Tidley and Isaacs both took two wickets.
