Currently completing his second year of a sports psychology degree at Chichester University, the role enables Yardy to continue to develop his coaching skills and will work alongside his commitments at Hurstpierpoint College and the Sussex CCC Academy.

Middleton chairman Matt Warren said: “Mike coming on board represents a great opportunity for our players to learn and develop their skills from one of the county’s best players in recent years.

“He is hungry to make a success of his coaching career, something he almost certainly will do. For us it’s great to have the opportunity to be a part of that journey.

“It’s really exciting news for everyone at Middleton and we very much look forward to welcoming him to the club, the players can’t wait to start working with him.”

Yardy said: “I’m very excited to work with an exciting crop of young players, and will look to help them in whatever way I can to fulfil their potential and go on to be future stars of Middleton Cricket Club.”

First XI skipper and former Sussex player Sean Heather thinks the addition is a great one for the club, saying: “To have someone of Mike Yardy’s quality and experience working with our senior players will be invaluable.

“Not only does he have experience of playing international and domestic cricket, he also grew up in Sussex playing league cricket which means he understands what is required for players to be successful at all levels of the game.”

Winter nets take place every Sunday at Littlehampton School between 5pm and 7pm; outdoor nets run every Wednesday night at Middleton Sports Club from April 6 onwards, 6pm start.
