Sussex Cricket League Round-up: East Grinstead take the lead after smashing Roffey

After winning the toss and asking Roffey to bat, Grinstead tore through the reigning champions’ batting.

New Zealand overseas player Carl Cachopa gave a scintillating display by taking 8-29 in 11.1 overs which dismissed Roffey for just 62.

Mike Norris was Roffey’s topscorer with 24.

Grinstead then made 67 without loss to reach their target in just 8.5 overs.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice was unbeaten on 42 and Will Atkin was 24 not out.

The 10-wicket victory knocked Roffey off the top down to third place, 26 points behind East Grinstead but with a game in hand.

Roffey’s defeat lifted Preston Nomads up a place to second after they drew with lowly Eastbourne, who stay out of the relegation zone.

In a high scoring game, Eastbourne made 328 all out with Callum Jackson hitting 89, Dom Shepheard 59, Mark Tomsett 57 and Brad Evans making 46.

For Nomads, Kashif Ibrahim took 4-69 and Carl Simon 3-84.

Robert Wakefield scored an unbeaten 111 for Noamds in their reply and was helped by Dan Phillips who hit 88.

Matt Cooke, Ben Twine and Jacob Smith shared two wickets each as for Eastbourne as Nomads were 319-6 at stumps.

Premier Division newcomers Billingshurst completed a notable double by beating local derby rivals Horsham for the second time this season.

Played at Horsham’s Cricketfield Road Ground, Horsham won the toss and asked Billingshurst to bat.

Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi ran out of partners sculpting a fine unbeaten 101 and Tom Nightingale added 30 to push ‘Hurst to 210 all out.

In an exciting conclusion, Andy Barr (3-39) and Ben Williams (4-51) combined to dismiss Horsham just three runs short of victory at 208 all out.

Barr got opener Ben Shoare out for a duck and then at the end took out the final two batsmen, Matt Simpson and Michael Munday to clinch victory.

Horsham’s topscorers in a disappointing result were Matt Bidlake (72) and Kevin Stoute (44).

Middleton are deep in the relegation zone after they lost to Bexhill by seven wickets.

Shawn Johnson took 4-39 to help dismiss Middleton for 175, whose topscorer was Sean Heather with 46.

Malcolm Johnson then made 77 not out and Asher Zaidi contributed 41 as Bexhill reached their target for the loss of just three wickets.

Lindfield look to be favourites to become Division Two champions after they beat Three Bridges by three wickets.

They extended their lead to 31 points ahead of second-placed Hastings & St Leonards who drew with Pagham.

Worthing are third after beating bottom of the table Crowhurst Park by five wickets.

Hayden James took 4-49 and Shane Wilson-Yelverton bagged 3-66 for leaders Lindfield.

They skittled Bridges out for 176 as the only batsmen to make an impact were Ollie Blandford with 34 and Mike Rose who was unbeaten on 30.

Simon Shivnarain hit 48 and Adrian Chappell took 3-39 as Lindfield reached 180-7 in reply.

Harry Finch blasted a superb 126 not out and Tom Gillespie was run out for 86 as Hastings made 251-5 having won the toss at Horntye Park.

Peter Cotterill was the best bowler for Pagham, who went on to accrue 215-7. Their leading batsmen were Eranga Dissangge (56), Michael Hales (50) and Joe Turner (47). Elliot Hooper took 3-61 for Hastings.

In a low-scoring game, Worthing beat Crowhurst Park by five wickets. Jamie Piper took 3-48 to limit Crowhurst to 151 all out, with Colin Ayres blasting 41 off 22 balls. Clove Tong added 40.

Worthing reached their target in just 28.2 overs. Josh Wood struck 46 and Ben Challen hit 25 in a total of 152-5, depite Brad Payne taking 4-56.

St James’s (214-8) drew with Ansty (139-9) with Adam Davies getting 60 for St James’s and Ansty bowler Jack Palser scooping 5-41.

Ifield overseas player Guru Kedarnath bagged a remarkable 5-10 to propel his side to a convincing 120-run victory against Findon.

The visitors won the toss and put Ifield in at Ifield Green. Joe Smith hit 46, Dan Groves was unbeaten on 39 and Anas Vora made 35 as Ifield declared on 193-6.

Guru’s devastating bowling then combined with Jigar Parekh’s 3-14 to dismiss Findon for 73 to gain maximum points.

In Division Three Bognor continue to dominate with a 79-point lead after gaining a four-wicket win against Steyning.

Jim Fallick topscored with 47 while Andy Isaacs caused damage by taking 3-41 as Bognor reached 217-6.

Earlier Dave Kennett blasted an unbeaten 63 and Gary Hund struck 52 not out in Steyning’s total of 215-7.

Crawley Eagles (172-6) remain second after notching up a four-wicket win against Haywards Heath (169 all out).

Fazlan Nizamdeen starred with bat and ball for Eagles, topscoring with 43 and taking 3-24.

Opener Azam Riyard made 42 and Atif Ali took 3-36. Isaac Leckie got 51 for Heath.

Chichester Priory (56-0) gained a 10-wicket victory over Portslade (52 all out), while Glynde & Beddingham beat Rottingdean by 27 runs.

Burgess Hill (186 all out) beat Goring-By-Sea (117 all out) by 69 runs. Aaron Wyatt took 7-46 for Goring, while Peter Billingham and Huh Warmisham both took four wickets for Hill.

Mayfield lead Division Four by 29 points after gaining 185-run win against Hellingly. Their main scorers were Sam Hyne (115 not out) and Tom Kimber (59).

Marco Prestorius took 3-40 and Jack Skinner 3-23 for Mayfield.

Crawley continue to keep the pressure on at the top with a 125-run victory over Keymer thanks to a magnificent 107 by Indian overseas player Kunal Kapoor.

Skipper Harry Chaudhary added 50 in a total of 245.

Kyemer were dismissed for 120 thanks to some great bowling by Paul Clifford (4-29) and Chaudhary (3-49).

Promotion candidates Slinfold lost ground by losing to Stirlands.

There were also wins for Rye and Southwater over Henfield and Wisborough Green respectively.
