Sussex fight back on day one at Arundel

Luke Wells in action for Sussex against Yorkshire this afternoon

Sussex were 108-1 at one stage, before they fell to 188-7 but 45 from debutant James Tredwell, on loan from Kent, helped boost the total, before an unbroken last-wicket stand of 52 between Jon Lewis and Lewis Hatchett.

Lewis finished unbeaten on 50, with Hatchett ten not out.

Chris Nash and Luke Wells shared a 48-run opening stand, before Nash was caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow off Steve Patterson for 28.

Rory Hamilton-Brown added 60 for the second wicket with Wells, before he fell for 45 to Tim Bresnan, who accounted for Sussex captain Ed Joyce for a duck four balls later.

Luke Wright struck a quickfire 21, before Matt Machan (three) and Ben Brown (six) were out cheaply to leave Sussex 163-6.

Wells, the mainstay of the innings, was dismissed for 74, after striking 11 fours from 182 balls, with the score on 188.

Tredwell added 39 for the eighth wicket with Steve Magoffin (12), before he was out for 45 following a 21-run stand with Jon Lewis.

Lewis, with last man Hatchett, saw Sussex past 250 and reach 300 to pick up two extra batting points.

Bresnan finished with 3-78 from 23 overs for Yorkshire.
