Three Bridges beat Brighton to open August Cup account ... Crawley Eagles still soaring

Action involving Three Bridges, Crawley Eagles and Horley features in our round-up of the weekend's cricket action.

Three Bridges CC skipper Conor Golding was pleased to get back to winning ways on Saturday.

Bridges picked up their first win of the August Cup with a convincing 98-run win against Brighton and Hove.

This followed two defeats against Preston Nomads and Middleton.

Golding said: “What was pleasing about the win is correcting our mistakes against Middleton. We established that our fielding was poor and that we could have executed our plans when bowling better, for me that’s this biggest take away from this game.

“Being able to correct those mistakes.”

Bridges batted first and posted 256-6 from their 40 overs with Sam Cooper (51) and James Russell (57) continuing their good form before Joe Walker hit a commanding 70 from 58 balls.

Golding said: “From looking at the first innings it was a day for the seamers myself and Arran Brown knew we had to set the tone from the off and look to get both key men Bryce Hounsome and Luke Wells out early and that’s exactly what we done.

“I believe all our bowlers hit the right lengths and coupled up with some good fielding, taking our chances in the field which created the pressure that ultimately won us the game.”

Crawley Eagles v Felbridge 2nd

Eagles’ first team made it three wins from three when the defeated Felbridge by 41 runs at Cherry Lane.

Promising youngsters Umer Moufeed and Danyal Razzaq showcased their talent with major roles in the win. Eagles batted first and were in trouble at 4-2 but a solid innings from Razzaq (47) at a crucial time helped enable the remaining batsmen to play freely.

Razlan Razik’s quick 56 included five sixes and three fours and helped the team to a total of 231-6 off 40 overs.

In reply Felbridge were restricted by very good bowling from Moufeed who took 1-42.

Fallah Uddin claimed 3-35 and captain Anjum Zafer (1-32) chipped in as the visitors ended on 190-6 off 40 overs, Gavin Botha 69 not out.

Eagles play their penultimate game of this campaign at Worth Abbey School on Saturday against Ram CC (12.30pm).

Eagles 2nds had their first defeat when they lost by six wickets at Dormansland.

Richard Waddington became the first senior Horley player to make a century this season when he scored 101 for the seconds in Saturday’s Surrey Championship Challenge Cup match against Chaldon CMO.

The opener hit his ton from 91 balls, his fifth century for Horley and just one short of his highest score for the club.

Aryan Patel was the next highest scorer with 32, Zack Collins got 25 and Christian Kelly 22 in Horley’s total of 228 for five from 40 overs.

Chaldon won by two wickets. Rob Jamieson, Alex Rooney and Tom Clargo took two wickets each, while Darren Croft and Adam Stephenson – Horley’s most economical bowler – took one each.

Horley Development XI

A blistering 89 not out off 44 balls by Ben Davies took the Horley development XI to a comfortable seven-wicket win in a friendly v Chailey.

Sam Remfry hit nine fours in his 56 not out from 52 balls. Davies swung the bat more, hitting 12 fours and three sixes. They were replying to Chailey’s total of 162-9 in 32 overs. The visitors’ innings was interrupted by torrential rain at Horley Row but the sun returned.

Adam Stephenson was the pick of the Horley bowlers, taking 2-9. Aryan Patel took 2-21 and Ben Cooper 2-29. Davies, Evan Grimwood and Jonathan Barnett took one apiece.

Davies and Remfry took the total to 163-3 after 20.3 overs.

Horley U13s entered the Sussex Festival Bowl for the first time and had an excellent week. One win, two winning draws and one loss put them 10th out of 20 of the county’s top under-13 teams.
