Wernars sets up Priory T20 win

HASTINGS Priory belatedly got their defence of the Sussex Premier Cricket League under way with a Twenty20 win at Horsham.

The recent wet weather which washed out virtually the entire opening day the previous weekend meant a delayed start on Saturday.

The teams did manage to get in a 20 overs-a-side match at the venue where Priory clinched the title last season.

Put into bat, the visitors totalled 146-5 thanks to an innings of 79 from Sussex professional Kirk Wernars. Devon Endersby claimed 3-16.

In reply, Horsham finished on 125-8 with the wickets being shared between Josh Poysden (3-15), Matt Machan (2-19), Wernars (1-27) and Mick Glazier (1-21). Priory received 16 points and Horsham 10.

Also in the top flight, Bexhill held on for a draw at home to Eastbourne after surviving the last three overs with nine wickets down.

The visitors made 207-6 with Mark Tomsett hitting 50 and Aaron Mullins 51 not out as Joe Cox took 2-60. Bexhill finished on 176-9 thanks to good knocks from skipper Malcolm Johnson (92) and Tim Hambridge (43). Mullins grabbed 5-70.

Crowhurst Park romped to a nine-wicket win against Burgess Hill in Division Three (East), while Sidley’s Division Two fixture at St James’s Montefiore fell foul of the weather.
