Worthing skipper Glover eyes top-flight survival

After an absence of two years, Worthing won Division 2 last year to ensure they would be competing in Sussex’s top division once again. Glover feels being crowned champions last year will stand them in good stead heading into what is going to be a tricky campaign.

He said: “We’ve got great team spirit and everyone believes in each other at the club. To get back into the Premier League is a great achievement but we want to make sure we stay there. We know it’s going to be a level up but we have the belief and, on our day, can beat anyone.”

Worthing will be hoping to get off to a fast start and secure some early wins.

They have been handed a key clash first up when they travel to fellow-promoted side Hastings on the opening day, on May 7.

Glover sees that as key for both sides and said: “We’ve sat down and identified where we feel we can pick up points next season.

“We know how hard it’s going to be but we are confident of surviving.

“That game first up is big for both ourselves and Hastings, that could set the tone for our season.”

Before that first league fixture, Worthing travel to Middleton, who were relegated from the Premier League last year, in the Gray-Nicolls T20 Cup on Saturday.

Glover said: “Middleton had been in the top league for a while and we will have to be at our best to beat them. But a win will give us the perfect start to what will hopefully be a successful season.”

Findon captain Bradley Bridson hopes to be in a position to have a strong finish to the season this year.

Findon were relegated from Division 2 last year and have lost all-rounder James Iago to Broadwater but have brought in Australian opening batsman Mark Solway.

Bridson said: “We’ll look to make a solid start in the league but we’ve got people at university for the first six or seven weeks.

“Hopefully, come the end of the year, we’ll be in a position to have a good push and finish as high as possible.

“At worst, we’ve got to finish in the top half because of the league restructure, otherwise we could be in Division 4.”

Bridson is also targeting the national stages of the National Village Cup.

Findon travel to Pagham in the Sussex League T20 Cup on Saturday.

Goring have added West Indies all-rounder Marques Clarke to their team for the new Division 3 season.

The right-arm paceman and aggressive batsman will make his debut when Goring travel to Portslade in the T20 Cup on Saturday.

Looking ahead to the season, Goring skipper Alex Maynard said: “We’ve got Marques in and a couple of other players as well.

“As a club, last year wasn’t great and with the restructure we want to be in the top half this year, if not pushing for the top three.”
