In the context of their battle to remain in Division One Yardy’s contribution could prove crucial and it was certainly well received.

He was quickly into his stride today after overnight rain delayed the start until midday, hitting Jamie Overton for successive boundaries before an extra-cover drive for four off Peter Trego took him to 98. He reached his century with a leg glance off Tim Groenewald for four and the crowd gave him a lengthy standing ovation before he departed for 104, caught at long leg by James Hildreth in Trego’s next over, having faced 165 balls and hit 17 fours.

While Yardy celebrated there was disappointment for Ashar Zaidi who was leg before to Overton for 91, having added just a single to his overnight score, in the second over of the day.

Chris Jordan, celebrating his England recall for the T20 squad that will take on Pakistan later this year, was unbeaten on 13 at the break.
