Yardy returns to Priory as Legends win

Michael Yardy returned to Hastings Priory for a special president’s day Twenty20 match on Sunday.

The former Sussex captain and England international was part of the Priory Legends team which beat a Priory Club side by five wickets at Horntye Park.

Yardy remarkably took three catches and three stumpings as Club scored 153-8 batting first. Ex-Sussex and Durham spinner Nick Phillips, who travelled down from Newcastle for the game, returned stunning figures of 6-21.

Dave Draper blasted a game-high 67 and fellow opener Toby Finzel hit 25 for Club, but Harry Finch (18) and Adam Maharaj-Newman (15) were the only others to reach double figures in a total of 153-8.

Elliot Hooper claimed the prize scalp of Yardy for 13 via a Jake Woolley stumping, but Jason Finch (48) - last year’s Sussex League-winning Priory captain - and this year’s captain George Campbell (52) put Legends on track.

They eventually knocked off the runs with two balls to spare. Freddie Hulbert was the most successful Club bowler with 2-7, and there was a wicket each for Jack Coleman and Joe Lamb.

“It was a cracking day; absolutely lovely to see everybody again,” said Campbell. Other former Priory players on show included Bob Phillips, James Chaplin, Nick Stretton, Dan Burnett and Carl Read.
