Bexhill-based world number 52 Jimmy Robertson saw off Andrew Norman in the afternoon before St Leonards-based world number 14 Mark Davis whitewashed Barry Pinches in the evening.

An early break of 61 helped give Robertson the opening frame and a 56 at the start of the second doubled his advantage at the Barnsley Metrodome. Robertson didn’t make a break over 30 in the next two frames, but still managed to go 4-0 up.

Runs of 35 and 37 in the fifth completed a comprehensive victory over 108th-ranked Norman in just two hours. Robertson’s reward will be a plum clash against Mark Selby in the event proper at the end of January assuming the UK Championship runner-up beats Pankaj Advani in his qualifying tie this afternoon (Thursday).

An opening 60 gave Davis the first frame, but he had to come from behind to win the next two. A 61 put Pinches in control of the second only for Davis to draw a foul and win it with a 44 clearance. Pinches scored the first 44 points of frame three, but Davis again turned it around aided by a 44.

Davis comfortably took the fourth with several small breaks and a 68 at the start of the fifth finished the job against 70th-ranked Pinches. Davis will face David Gilbert or Zhang Anda at the venue stage in the new year.

Robertson will be back at the table tomorrow (Friday) morning when he takes on 99th-ranked Alex Davies in the Haikou World Open Qualifiers, also in Barnsley. Davis will be up against Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon on Saturday morning.
